A long narrow mat for the strip of floor you actually stand on, in front of a sink or a hob. The surface wipes rather than absorbs, which is what you want where oil and water land, and the border patterns are woven into the print rather than sitting on top of it.

Choosing
Kilim Navy and Kilim Taupe carry the busiest border. Diamond Navy and Diamond Cocoa reduce it to a single outline on a plain ground. Herring Navy and Herring Sand run chevron stripes the length of the mat. Cross Cream and Fine Line are the palest and quietest.
Choosing a length
Measure the run of floor first. 70cm suits a single standing spot at a sink. 120cm covers a sink and the counter beside it. 150cm runs a galley kitchen or a hallway.
Care
Wipe with a damp cloth as things land on it. Vacuum on a low setting. Lift it and dry the floor underneath now and then, since anything trapped under a non slip backing stays wet.
