A freestanding block cut from solid wood with open slots rather than a closed cavity, so blades slide in from the side and you can see what is in each slot. Open slots also dry, which a sealed block never really does.

Where to put it
Beside the hob or at the back of a prep counter, where it is reachable while you cook rather than tucked in a corner. Keep it away from the edge of the worktop if there are children in the house.
Care
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Put knives in dry, never wet, and oil the wood occasionally with a food safe oil to stop it drying out and splitting.
