Fringed Jute Placemat

A woven jute and cotton mat with a fringed edge and a raised weave, in natural undyed color. It is the plain, quiet sort of mat that lets the china do the talking, and the texture is what gives a bare table something to sit against. Natural jute reads warm on dark wood and stops a white table looking clinical, which is why it has become a Lumen & Loam standby.

Jute and cotton are woven together and left undyed, so the color is the fiber's own and varies a little across a set. The short edges are fringed. Several weaves are offered: a plain weave, a small diamond weave and a large diamond weave, plus a small 11cm coaster in the same construction. Each piece is sold singly, so a table for six is built up rather than bought in one box.

Use them on a dining table, a kitchen island or a console, and the coaster wherever a glass lands. Spot clean only: shake out crumbs and wipe with a barely damp cloth. Jute stiffens and shrinks if it is soaked, so keep it out of the machine and let it dry flat. Handled that way, a set lasts through years of ordinary dinners.
