Description

A freestanding block cut from solid wood, with open slots rather than a closed cavity, so blades slide in from the side and you can see what is in each slot. On a worktop it looks like a piece of furniture rather than a gadget, and the bare wood warms up a kitchen of steel and stone. It is a substantial, long lived Lumen & Loam kitchen piece that stays out on display.

The wood is solid and left unstained. Open slots take cleavers, paring knives, scissors and a sharpening steel, and they dry properly, which a sealed block never really does. A non slip base keeps the block still when a blade is pulled out one handed. Knives are not included, so it can be matched to a set you already own rather than forcing you to replace one.

Three sizes: small, medium and large. Stand it beside the hob or at the back of a prep counter where it is reachable while you cook, rather than tucked into a corner. Keep it back from the edge of the worktop if there are children in the house. Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away, put knives in dry, and oil the wood occasionally with a food safe oil.

  • Material: solid wood, unstained
  • Slots: open sided, for cleavers, paring knives, scissors and a steel
  • Sizes: small, medium, large
  • Base: non slip
  • Knives: not included
  • Care: wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry at once, oil with a food safe oil

Safety notice: Store knives with the blades fully inserted and keep the block out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fits in the slots?

Cleavers, paring knives, chef knives, scissors and a sharpening steel. The open sided slots take a range of blade sizes without forcing anything.

Does it come with knives?

No, and that is a plus. It is made to hold the knives you already own, so you are not replacing a set you like.

Will it move when I pull a knife out?

The non slip base keeps the block still when a blade is drawn out one handed, so it stays put on the worktop.

How do I care for the wood?

Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Put knives in dry, and oil the wood occasionally with a food safe oil to keep it looking its best.

Which size should I choose?

Small suits a few everyday knives, medium a standard set with scissors and a steel, and large a full collection. All three stand beside the hob or at the back of a prep counter.
